Prep 2019http://www.stsebastiansyeronga.qld.edu.au/Whats-on/Pages/Prep-2019.aspxPrep 2019
Enrolments for Prep 2019 are open for enrolments for children born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014.

I have spent time interviewing the families who are looking to join our 2019 Prep Year. This is a rewarding experience as I get to meet their beautiful little children (and their parents), who are so keen to tell me about themselves and why they want to come to our school. Our student leaders then take the prospective families on a tour of the classrooms. Through simple opportunities like this we get to show others the enthusiasm and pride our senior students have for our school. We are also very proud to showcase the great learning and teaching that is an everyday event throughout our school. I hope you are too!

Safer Internet Dayhttp://www.stsebastiansyeronga.qld.edu.au/Whats-on/Pages/Safer-Internet-Day.aspxSafer Internet Day
The 5th February 2019 was Safer Internet Day and St Sebastian’s is on board!

Safer Internet Day raises awareness about the positive role of digital technology and explores ways we can all contribute to creating a better, safer internet. Coordinated by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner in Australia and celebrated in over 130 countries, this year’s Safer Internet Day theme is ‘Together for a better internet’. As parents, you are encouraged to get involved and support our young people in developing the critical skills required to successfully navigate the online world. These skills take time to develop but they can help us in all areas of life - online and off.

We like to call them the 4Rs...

Respect - I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated
Responsibility - I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong
Reasoning - I question what is real
Resilience - I get back up from tough situations

Help spread the word about creating a safer, more positive internet—start a conversation with your child about which of the 4Rs of online safety is most important to them and how can they help build a better internet for everyone. During part of the first weeks of school, each child at St Sebastian’s, reviews the expectations teachers have of their digital citizenship and how they can use digital tools appropriately both at school and at home.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s iParent portal is packed with resources to help you address online safety with your children. If you want you can download ‘The Lost Summer’ video game for a fun way to learn and practise the 4Rs. Or take the Screen Smart Parent Tour to help your child manage online issues, should they arise.

To see what others are doing, or to find out how you can get involved, visit esafety.gov.au/saferinternetday

Parents and Friends - AGMhttp://www.stsebastiansyeronga.qld.edu.au/Whats-on/Pages/Parents-and-Friends---thank-you.aspxParents and Friends - AGM
The Parents and Friends Association (P and F) is an integral part of a Catholic school community in the archdiocese and provides a formal structure for parents and others interested in the welfare of the students to plan and organise activities for the benefit of the school, and the ongoing development of students. At St Sebastian’s the P and F is active in their support for other parents, the teachers and staff and, of course our students. Each year they provide valuable resources that enhance the teaching and learning in our school. Resources like the yearly support of ICT materials (mainly laptops) for the students. This in turn allows the school to focus on adding extra teaching staff / time above our allotted schedule.

In particular our Parents and Friends Association:

provides an avenue of support and information to aid the involvement of parents/carers in their children’s education and the school community

promotes the development of collaboration between parents/carers and school staff

promotes the principles of Catholic education and a distinctive Christian community/environment in the school

provides an opportunity to participate in school community fund raising events.

The Parents and Friends Association represents the interests of the whole parent body at any school. The roles of the committee and the general running procedures is based on those devised by the Brisbane Archdiocesan Council of Parents and Friends Association (BACoPaFA) which represents the Catholic School Community Parent and Friends Association in south-east Queensland and functions within a constitution approved by the Archbishop.

Please stay and support your P and F representatives at the AGM’s election of positions for the 2019 P and F. This is held beside the tuckshop at 6:30pm. Each year all role holders step down; They may nominate for reelection and join other applicants for the position. Anyone from our school parent community may apply for the positions. Please see the Parent Portal for a description of the positions.

The staff and I look forward to sharing Friday evening with you at our P and F Welcome BBQ.
