Catholic Identity

St Sebastian’s School provides community members with many opportunities to participate and learn within and about the Catholic Christian tradition.  Teaching and learning within the subject area of Religion is one component of this.

St Sebastian’s school shares and promotes the Vision for Religious Education articulated by Brisbane Catholic Education.  This vision includes the two dimensions of formation- namely, of students’ religious literacy and their personal faith:

The schools and colleges of the Archdiocese of Brisbane aspire to educate and form students who are challenged to live the gospel of Jesus Christ and who are literate in the Catholic and broader Christian tradition so that they might participate critically and authentically in faith contexts and wider society.

The St Sebastian’s Religious Education Program is based upon the Model for Religious Education which is made up of two dimensions – “teaching people religion and teaching people to be religious in a particular way”.

The Archdiocese of Brisbane Religion Curriculum P-12 is the starting point for planning for teaching, learning and assessing of Religion and it follows the same format as the Learning Areas of the Australian Curriculum.  Student learning is assessed according to their progress against the Yearly Achievement Standards, incorporating a balance of core content and skills.

The Religious Life and Catholic Christian Ethos of the St Sebastian’s School Community is evident on a daily basis through our everyday actions and interactions.  St Sebastian’s is a welcoming Catholic Christian community, gathering regularly to participate in formal and informal prayer celebrations. Following the example of Saint Sebastian and in the tradition of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph, we aim to act with courage, service and justice. In the words of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our students aim to ‘Never seeing a need without doing something about it’.  We are a Christ-centred community, aiming to develop students who become active, critical participants in society, reaching out to others with faith, knowledge and love.
