Nut Aware School

nutaware.jpgThere are a number of students, across the different year levels at St Sebastian’s who have Anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening. It usually occurs rapidly after exposure to a food, insect or medicine to which a person may already be allergic. Anaphylaxis must always be treated as a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment with adrenaline.

Our students allergies range from nuts (of all kinds) and eggs, to coconut and salmon. We ask that parents be aware of these items when packing their child’s lunch and be considerate to not to include them in their child’s lunchbox. Our staff are aware of the children with anaphylaxis and the school has procedures in place to deal with a reaction. We ask if parents could please check ready made items for inclusion of nuts, for example, many muesli bars contain nuts and certainly Nutella contains nuts. Look for ‘lunchbox friendly’ or ‘nut free’ items at the supermarket as an alternative. As a community we all play a role in keeping our students safe. For further information on Anaphylaxis click here
