NAPLAN

This year St Sebastian’s will be engaging in NAPLAN through the online tools. We originally aimed to do this last year, however, the tests were cancelled. Federal, state and territory education ministers agreed that all schools will gradually transition from the paper-based NAPLAN to NAPLAN Online in order to provide a better and more precise assessment that is more engaging for students. Due to these changes NAPLAN will no longer be the three days in May but will be conducted From Tuesday 11 May to Friday 21 May, more precise dates will appear closer to the time. We are encouraging all students (particularly those in Year 5) to engage in more typing experiences on their laptops as this is how their writing assessment will be completed.

One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, in which the test presents questions of higher or lower complexity depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should discuss the use of any adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher. A student with a disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background, may be granted a formal exemption. There is a particular cut off time for this so please feel free to speak to your class teacher, Angela, Peter or myself.

We will hold more parent information sessions for those who have students in year 3 or 5 closer to the date prior to a Parents and Friends meeting.
